The first footbridge over the Ewaso Ngiro River

Flash flooding and rising water levels on the river are becoming a real danger for the Shompole Community. Together with the NGO ‘Bridging the Gap’ we built the first footbridge over the Ewaso Ngiro River in 2011.

In August 2011 three young Masai warriors disappeared trying to cross the Ewaso Ngiro River, they were washed away by the flooding waters and believed to be drowned. (as a matter of fact it turned out that they reappeared a week later from a scouting expedition)

Nevertheless the bridge was needed and with Harmon Parker of ‘Bridging the Gap’ we decided to go ahead with building the footbridge across the river. The work commenced early October and the bridge was completed by the end of November 2011.

Total bridge cost was 1,091,250 Kenya Shillings. Mwitu na Watu provided 419,070 KSH, Shompole Group Ranch 200,000 KSH from Loisiijo Lodge revenue, the balance was expertise, cables and technical labor provided by ‘Bridging the Gap’.
